Process: Chop Shop Backbar & Walk-in Surround

The answer to the question of how best to introduce a feminine element to what was a decidedly masculine space dominated by heavy timber, steel, and concrete came when Mētis found this salvaged entry at Earthwise Salvage in Seattle.
The entry had been a prominent feature of the recently demolished Williamsburg Court Apartments but would soon give shape and character to the Chop Shop backbar and walk-in surround.
The design process started with several crude sketches - replace the door and sidelites with shelving, add width to create additional shelving, include a crown detail to tie the back bar into the rest of the walk-in surround...
Gradually details of the design are refined...
The next step involved mocking up the back bar. Here a piece of head trim with a decorative flourish to help define the center of the piece is mocked up. Looked fine in a rendering but perhaps not such a good idea...
The nearly completed piece giving a sense of how the crown detail unifies the back bar and walk-in surround.
The finished piece stocked and ready for customers... Photo by Suzi Pratt
