The Bike Works renovation was realized in collaboration with Deb, Tina, Steve, Liz, Ellie, Leland, Homer, and Davey of Bike Works and Kate Cudney of Hinge Studio.
…they were rad…
Bike Works is a local non-profit that has worked with youth in South Seattle to promote cycling and an appreciation of the outdoors for the last 20 years. A program after Mētis’ own heart, area youth are given an opportunity to earn a used bicycle by volunteering with the organization and, subsequently, are taught the art of bicycle maintenance as they work to restore their cycle.
Some of the work that Bike Works does in the community is supported by revenues from the non-profit Bike Works bike shop located on Ferdinand St in Columbia City. The Bike Works project was defined by a clear need for a more functional and inviting bike shop and a very limited budget. Working closely with Kate Cudney and with lots of input from the bike shop staff, Mētis was able to balance the requirements of the bike mechanics, the need for an improved retail area, and a desire for a fresh and playful aesthetic that includes rolling milk crate shelving that doubles as benches when necessary.
